Many of his albums consist almost entirely of jazz samples, though recently he has been more into general sound design and more natural sounds (which is disappointing). This is one of his best tracks showing a great mix of the grand three elements, electronic jazz and hip hop.

Like I was getting at, some of his tracks can veer too much into disjointed sound collage, but this track keeps a solid form, and because of that has a greater effect.

Essential Electronic Jazz Rap

If this is going to be a blog about combinations of electronic jazz and rap, then we got to have some Tribe.

We Got The Jazz by A Tribe Called Quest

This track features some nice jazz samples and a really strong beat. This will get you pretty far on its own, but also check out some of the comments from people. You'll see people saying things like "these guys are just biting off of...", then check out the band that is mentioned. You will also get people comparing bands and groups a lot, so check out what people are comparing.

Some YouTube users will post nothing but videos from a single genre of music. There may not even be any visuals except for a picture. For example, I found an awesome channel for experimental electronic music. Although not all of it is great stuff, its good for exploring what's out there. Maybe I or someone should start a channel for electronic jazz and hip hop combinations.

Until then, I will keep finding the individual videos and posting them here because, as always, TTIWWP.

Electronic Jazz Song - Jaga Jazzist: Lithuania

Although I really can't get behind the name 'Jaga Jazzist' don't let it fool you, their music is not lame at all. In fact this song in particular is pretty much as good as electronic jazz gets. A perfect blend of the two styles to create something that takes advantage of the best parts of each.

I think the drummer got this beat from Mr Walker by Wes Montgomery, which means he has great taste. I love the melody line played by the bells or chimes or whatever, and the climaxes in this song are great.

One thing to note is that they mixed it so that the song actually gets louder in parts, a rarity these days. Really everything about this song is great.

Stay tuned, we'll be taking a look at some more Jaga Jazzist in the future and I will continue to have to write their disappointing name, but oh well, they epitomize electronic jazz music.

Madlib's Last Electro-Acoustic Space Jazz and Percussion Ensemble

For any fans of Madlib out there, or anyone interested in some spaced out electro-jazz hip hop beats, this is the album for you. Supposedly Madlib himself is playing the percussion instruments on this album, and the rest is sampled I assume. In any case, it makes for some great grooving.

Madlib has always used some jazz in his production work, as have many rappers and producers, but its nice to get an album devoted to it. I might say that this type of electronic jazz is not my favorite, and is maybe a little too spacey for me, but there are times when you just want to have this playing and nothing else will really do.

Producers like Madlib are way overlooked, and after listening to them you can't go back to the cheesy synth work of all the people who dominate the mainstream hip hop world. The rest is pure Rosenwinkel modern jazz with some electronics thrown in. This is a really great album with variety and style.

The particular selection here is an uptempo driving piece that makes good night time driving music. The solos are engaging, especially rhythmically, and it all builds up to a really hip hop styled outro. Definitely check out this album for the best of electronic jazz hip hop.

Jazz Electronica - Space Lion - Music for Freelance

This is a great electronica track with some definite jazz action. It starts out with a nice string sample that continues throughout, though in modified forms. From there the jazz drums come in and a few other samples appear.

The album this comes from contains a bunch of remixed tracks from Cowboy Bebop, and they definitely have that sort of late night Anime feeling. This is the kind of thing I would listen to at 2am or something, driving through the city.

Like any good sample based song, the main loop never gets tiring, and in fact, you wouldn't want it to change to anything else, besides a few quick breaks.

Jazzy Electronic Beat: URBS - Nothing Gonna Change His Way

Here's a new jazzy beat for you. This comes from URBS, comprised of producer Peter Kruder. Although the rest of the album which features this song is pretty good, this track sticks out for its upbeat style. Anchored by a great bass line, some organ work, and repeating vocal and string samples round it out.

This track captures the right feel. This is the kind of music that makes you think your living in a music video. You just start to see your life unfolding in a cinematic and grand way.

One criticism is the strange break down in the middle. Too dramatic of a switch and it doesn't really seem related. Jazz has frequently collided with hip hop and electronics in general so it only seems natural to include it into the discussion.

This is San Francisco Nights by People Under the Stairs off of their album The Next Step. They are a great group for some laid back west coast hip hop and they always have some good samples going. This particular track features a nice jazz guitar line, Im not sure what the original sample is from but anyone can feel free to point it out.

Listening to rap like this makes most of the current shit seem pretty weak. Compare the tasteful sampling of jazz to any of the digital phony electronic fruityloops beats that pervade most of mainstream rap. To me, rap is linked with sampling records, not overdoing cheesy synth noises.

New Kurt Rosenwinkel Album

Hello ladies and gentlemen. It has been a while, but I just want to alert you to a new Kurt Rosenwinkel album that has come out. I've covers Rosenwinkel on this site before, and his new work isn't exactly electronic jazz, but it is some nice jazz in any case.

This particular album, named Our Secret World, features him with the backup of OJM, a Portuguese big band jazz group, who have arranged several of his tunes and help bring a new style to them that works pretty well.

Some have noted that the album is a little monotonous, and I agree to a certain point, but it is understandable, and If you are a Rosenwinkel fan, the album will not disappoint you. The arrangements cast new light on many of the selections and die hard fans will enjoy hearing familiar compositions with a new style. Check it out.

Also for any artists out there, have a look at this site which will let you post articles about music and free reviews to give yours or someone else's music some exposure. This should be a good resource for anyone out there looking for some information on music in general.

Examples of Electronic Hip Hop Jazz

This post is just going to be some examples of electronic hip hop jazz music that I know about. One of the first ones that comes to mind is Mos Def and his album Black on Both Sides. This is a hip hop album for sure, but you can hear a big jazz influence in songs like Umi Says, which has a jazz beat and many more electronic elements of the jazz style. The last track of the album, May-December, also has a great electronic jazz feel to it. Its actually an instrumental track and one of the strongest on the album, starting with a great piano riff and going into a latin style looped section.

Another good example of electronic jazz influenced hip hop would be Busdriver's Imaginary Places. This album uses a lot of jazz samples to construct the beats, and the result is a nice mix of jazz and hip hop. Using jazz samples in probably one of the most common ways to make something that would be considered hip hop jazz. It is a formula used by Amon Tobin, who has several albums of electronic beats made using almost entirely jazz samples.

The great thing about these combinations of musical styles is that it enable musicians and composers to have more tools at their disposal. This means that they can use more different types of sound to construct what they want in a song. The merging of different musical styles can also create a situation where more people are draw in to listening because they like one of the aspects you have used. For example, if someone who likes hip hop listens to a jazz song that uses a hip hop beat, that aspect of it will draw them into the song and may be a pathway towards getting into more jazz music.

The combining of musical styles should be seen as a good thing, and hopefully composers will continue finding ways to put styles together to create new forms of music like electronic jazz and jazz hip hop.

Hip Hop Jazz

Hip hop jazz is a relatively new style of music that combines jazz and hip hop in any number of ways. This could mean using rap beats in a jazz setting or using jazz samples for a hip hop track, the possibilities are endless. By taking these two genres of music and using parts of each together to form new types of sounds, musicians and composers have the opportunity to increase the appeal of their work across broader markets. They are also given more sound in their tonal pallet to work with to hopefully create better music.

A lot of the reason that hip hop jazz can exist today is the greater access people have to different styles of music around the world. Musicians today can become familiar with many more different styles of music and this has made it so new combinations of music are springing up. One of the latest of these is the combo of jazz and hip hop.

There are many notable hip hop beat producers and rappers that have used jazz elements for a while now. People Under the Stairs frequently use jazz samples in their beats, and the rapper Busdriver used them a lot on his album Imaginary Places. It will be interesting to see who starts using more of a jazz influence in the hip hop world in the future, as this style of music still has a lot of growing to do.

Promoting Electronic Jazz Music Online

If you are an electronic jazz musician, there are several ways to promote your music online that can help you gain listeners and sales. One thing that is already great about electronic jazz music is that it does not take a lot of live recording to produce. If you are using a lot of electronic elements in your recording, like an electronic drum beat, you are not going to have to spend a lot of money going to a recording studio to record parts. So you are starting out with a product that is not too expensive to make.

One of the best ways to sell music online is to have your own website that you can directly sell digital files from. This method is low maintenance once you get it set up, but it may take some time and effort to get everything going. The advantage is that you get to keep all of the profits yourself. The disadvantage is that you have to fix any problems that occur and be the customer service.

Another way to sell your electronic jazz music is to put it on a site like CDBaby. This will make things easier for you, but it will cost some money to set up and they will take a small percentage of your sales. The good part about this is it will automatically give you some online music promotion, as CDBaby already gets a lot of traffic from people looking for music.

Electronic jazz musicians should think about the different ways to sell music online, because a niche genre of music like this works perfectly for the new internet-based way of the music industry. Independent musicians are the way of the future, but to survive, you have to be actively learning how to use the internet.

Articles on Electronic Jazz Music

Thanks to the internet, the genre of electronic jazz music should be growing. I have seen a number of articles on it lately and this is a good sign. People are writing because they are interested in it and they see the potential that it has to be a great style of music and more a part of the mainstream. If you want to write a music article about electronic jazz, there are a number of article submission sites that will let you help spread the word.

More artists are already turning to jazz with electronic elements, or using jazz improvisation during electronic beats and other such techniques. The more that people explore what other styles of music have to offer and the more that we can combine the best parts, the better music that will be made all around.

Hopefully this recent trend of music articles on electronic jazz will continue and it becomes a style that more people are interested in. I have known for a long time that it has the potential to bring in a lot of listeners since it can combine that best parts of electronic music and jazz.

Electronic Jazz Hip Hop Beat Video

This is a great video I just found featuring graffiti artist Banksy's work set to an electronic jazz hip hop beat. This is a good example of how jazz can be set to electronic beats. Hip hop is a style that has never used jazz to its full potential, although there are a lot of good examples like this one. More rappers should look to jazz influences in their production work, it always seems to make a nice combination.

People looking to get some more promotion for their music should make videos like this for YouTube, its a good strategy. Many jazz guitarists are getting into using more electronic components in their music, which leads them to using more electronic effects in their guitar tone as well. This should be a good thing for the genre, as it will increase the number of artists reaching across styles, which always draws more people into the music.

For a long time, jazz guitarists have been using effects pedals for overdrive and distortion. Distortion pedals, or at least guitar distortion from an amp was used heavily by Grant Green in the early days of jazz guitar, and since then, there has been an explosion of different effects in jazz.

A number of modern guitarists use electronic effects like Bill Frisell, who makes good use of guitar multi effects pedals and samplers. He often will have sampled parts looping and play over top of them with lots of delay and reverb.

This expansion of guitar effects in jazz comes coupled with an increase in the use of electronics in the recording studio such as electronic beats and synthesizers. Electronic jazz music has been the basic creation of this modern merging of styles and hopefully the trend continues.

As more and more jazz artists start experimenting with electronics and more electronic artists begin using jazz elements such as improvisation in their music, the two genres will benefit and draw in more listeners, and this is good for everyone involved.

Electronic Jazz - Amon Tobin - Supermodified

Amon Tobin is a little different than most of the artists reviewed on this site thus far. Whereas many musicians involved in electronic jazz seem to be jazz musicians adding electronic elements to their music, Amon Tobin is a purely sample based electronic artist who uses jazz samples to make his songs. This highlights how many different combinations of styles can form what can only be called electronic jazz.

Supermodified is an album full of different jazz sample concoctions. The first track is an up tempo dance beat with heavy jazz drums.

Hold on, Im tired of reviews that talk about the songs one by one. Its lame and there is nothing too interesting to say. Lets just stick with Amon Tobin's general style.

Using jazz samples to make whole tunes is a great idea, and Tobin does it well, although some of his songs are a little on the repetitive side. At the same time, he always uses a large number of different samples in any one song.

The only thing that really bothers me about this album is the sort of queasy, treble-ly mixing; the general sound of it all. It gets to be a little much after a while. Still this is a nice ablum that anyone interested in electronic music or jazz should check out. If your a big jazz head, you might even recognize where some of the samples came from.

Electronic Jazz by Film Composers

I have been looking for the use of electronic jazz by film composers lately and i have not found much. If anyone knows some film composers who do have an electronic jazz style please leave a comment. One film composer I do know that uses jazz is Henry Mancini. He wrote a lot of great tunes, some of which became jazz standards. Most people probably know him for writing the pink panther theme.

His use of orchestration is a classic example of what I think of when I think of jazz related film music; pianos, strings, some horns, string bass. It creates a really reflective mood in a lot of his pieces. One of my favorite Mancini tunes is Soldier in the Rain. I recommend checking this piece out if you get the chance.

I dont think it will be too long until we see more electronic jazz styles in film music. There are already a lot of film composers using electronic music or at least electronic elements in combination with other styles. It will be interesting to see which types of movies will first employ electronic jazz.

Hopefully some modern jazz artist with a penchant for electronics will score a film soon.

Electronic Jazz - Enemies of Energy

The Enemies of Energy is Kurt Rosenwinkel's official debut album, although he had independently released previous records. This album is his first foray into an electronic jazz kind of style, which would later be expanded on his album Heartcore.

In Enemies, Rosenwinkel uses a variety of different sounds and styles to create an album full of surprising turns and some more traditional jazz flavors. This seems to be a staple of his electronic jazz albums; a great variety in the tonal pallet and compositions drawing from several sources stylistically. The first track of the album is one of the more traditional writings except for Rosenwinkel's almost strange muted guitar sound. This seems to be something he experimented with only on this album, and although it is certainly unique, you wonder if it could have improved the song to have a more normal sustained tone.

The next selection, Grant, is a better example of some electronic jazz music elements. It is a piece heavily influenced by funk and the title is most likely a tip of the hat to Grant Green and his more funk leaning recordings. It also makes good use of some studio work and other electronic music elements, but still manages a pretty live sounding jazz vibe. Once again Rosenwinkel has the same strange guitar sound, but thats not enough to really take away from the overall enjoyment.

Number Ten is another piece that makes the electronic jazz elements heard, with a synth solo and everything. This piece perfectly combines electornic music with jazz in a number of different ways, creating a very full range of sounds that build a nice song for a sunny day.

I will let you explore the rest of the album yourself. Enemies of Energy is a great first look at Rosenwinkel and a good album for anyone looking for jazz with a hint of electronic music. This is one of the electronic jazz albums that is lighter on the electronic and more leaning to the jazz, so it may be a good place to start for a jazz lover looking to get into electronic jazz.

Electronic Jazz: Barney Mcall

Barney Mcall is a pianist and composer who makes good electronic jazz music that leans more towards the jazz side, unlike many of the more electronic based groups talked about here. As with other heavily jazz influenced electronic jazz artists he plays and comes from straight ahead jazz and has added the use of electronics to his music to create electronic jazz. His music is also very influenced by the film score sound since he is also a film composer.

Many of Barney Mcall's tunes have a nice blend of acoustic and organic sounding ensembles mixed with a subtle use of electronics that only comes through in various moments. He also makes use of electric guitar but always in a way that blends with the ensemble. One of the other artists mentioned on this electronic jazz site, Kurt Rosenwinkel, is on his latest album and contributes some nice electric guitar lines.

Barney Mcall has created a more jazz leaning and acoustic leaning side of electronic jazz that will probably appeal more to jazz fans than electronic fans, but the electronics that he does use may help bridge the gap. For some wide ranging, film score inspired, electronic jazz, check out Barney Mcall.

Electronic Jazz Music - Zero 7

Zero 7 is a band that can sometimes be considered electronic jazz, though they lean more towards electronic pop music than improvised instrumental jazz elements. Still, for a fan of electronic jazz they might be worth checking out.

The first Zero 7 song anyone heard of was probably 'In the Waiting Line', a nice coincidence because this also happens to be one of their most jazz influenced songs. Everything about this tune is electronic jazz, with an electric piano, ride cymbal heavy drumming, jazz/blues vocals, and some nice electronic embellishments and audio effects to round things out. This is really a great example of how accessible and pop like electronic jazz can get, and its probably the best song Zero 7 will ever make, but thats ok, some of their more recent tunes also have a nice jazz feel mixed in with the electronics. Theres also a nice rhodes solo near the end of the song.

I would like to see Zero 7 embrace some more jazz elements, and I also think they should use the singer from this song in all of their songs, rather than getting different singers for different tunes and albums.

Electronic Jazz: Tortoise

Tortoise is an electronic, post rock, and jazz influenced group that has produced a lot of wide ranging music over the years. Their first self titled album is probably the closest thing they have to an album of electronic jazz music, but they have always maintained a distinct usage of jazz styles and instrumentation in many of their songs.

They have gotten more and more electronic over time and this has led them into the realm of electronic jazz. Their songs are frequently based on repeating structures and heavy drum beats, with a mixture of jazz elements on top.

On of their more electronic jazz influenced songs is 'Speakeasy'. It starts off with acoustic drumming and builds with bass, vibes, and electric guitars. While there isnt much conventional improvisation in this tune, it still sounds distinctly jazz with the added sounds of electronic music.

Another of their more electronic jazz tunes that does feature some nice bass improvisation is 'Glass Museum'. This song also features their trademark vibes and a very interesting electric bass tone. The bass solo is actually very interesting I should mention. It has an off beat kind of feel but manages to flow perfectly over top of band at the same time. Good stuff for any musicians out there to study as far as rhythm and timing.

Tortoise creates some very interesting music with unique lineup that includes elements of many different styles. But I think it is fair to consider some of their music to be electronic jazz, thought they are not as directly part of the style as some of the other artists reviewed on this site.

Electronic Jazz: Heartcore - Kurt Rosenwinkel

Heartcore by Kurt Rosenwinkel is a fantastic electronic jazz album that should be heard by fans of electronic music and jazz or any combination of the two. Kurt Rosenwinkel is one of the most influential current jazz guitarists and he sometimes dabbles in styles other than straight ahead jazz. This is a good thing that should be embraced by more jazz artists. It will make jazz more accessible to mainstream audiences of electronic music and hip hop without sacrificing the elements that make jazz jazz, and that is always a good thing.

Heartcore features a truely wide range of sounds and instrumentation, but underneath all of that is Kurt Rosenwinkel's distinct songwriting style and improvisation, along with a talented supporting group of other musicians. The tunes range from almost completely normal jazz (though still experimental and modern), such as the final track, to completely electronic tracks such as 'Interlude'.

One of the highlights of this album, and maybe one of the best examples of what electronic jazz music should be, is 'Love in the Modern World'. This selection features an organic, almost classical beginning with splashed of sampled strings that takes off into an amazing improvised jazz section driven by a very tasteful electronic beat. If there is one song that someone should chose to represent the growing medium of electronic jazz music, it would be this.

Jazz artists like Kurt Rosenwinkel exploring new ground with electronics is a great thing for jazz and music in general, and I am hoping he continues down this path of music, though I love his normal jazz albums as well. Check out this album if you are new to the idea of electronic jazz.

Elelctronic Jazz: Jaga Jazzist

Jaga Jazzist is an electronic jazz group that features a pretty even mix of electronic elements and jazz melodies and improv. The album of theirs that I have is A Living Room Hush. From what I can tell, it seems to be one of their more jazz oriented albums, where as their other musical entries seems to be more electronicly focused. One of the reasons this album is such a great work is the combination of organic jazz instrumentation with modern electronic sounds and devices.

The presence of bass clarinet on this electronic jazz album is one of the best parts. In 'Airborne' Jaga Jazzist builds a really nice jazz track that moves into a more dance/electronica oriented improvistional middle section, before returning to the original bass clarinet melody.

Jaga Jazzist seems to have the most success and originality with tracks where they feature more of the jazz element. Their electronic tracks do not stick out when compared to countless other electronic groups, and they are sometimes a chore to sit through. I think Jaga Jazzist should embrace more jazz song formats and improvisation in the future to really develop their stuff.

Electronic Jazz Privacy Policy

Our Privacy Policy

As a fellow Internet user myself, I respect your online privacy. This style is often refered to as jazztronica, electronic jazz, e jazz, electric jazz, and nu jazz. The birth of jazz tronica makes sense considering the modern state of music recording and production. With it being so easy for people to produce electronic music on their own and then record a few instruments in less expensive home studios, it is natural that just about every style will be combined with electronic music. Jazztronica is on a long list following combnations of classical and electronica, hip hop, and R&B.

Samples of jazz music have come way before jazztronica and are an important part in the rise of electronic music. The move from samples into more originally created materials is probably the future of jazztronica and all electronic music. Keyboards and new age electronic instruments that combine touch screens with computer sequencers allow more possiblilities in sound design and live performance that can really benefit jazztronica and electronic jazz.

For jazztronica to succede creatively in the future and not just become electronic music with a certain jazz influence it will have to incorperate the definging aspects of modern jazz, which may be simply improvisation. A swing feel and a certain vocabulary have become less important in jazz, as players influenced by more expansive forms of music have globalized even traditional forms of jazz. Jazztronica should feature improvisation of electrical instruments and synthysizers, as well as acoustic instruments and samples. The key to all this is to establish the creative and pioneering attitude of jazz within electronic music.

Jazztronica could become an important style of the future that might take over jazz completely. Elelctronic instruments will become more popular in the future and music creation is already so much less expensive and time consuming when contained within a computer. It will be interesting to see the movement of electronic music, jazz, and jazztronica in the coming years.
